Soundbath Facilitator Training with Zen with Ben
Join Ben at A Fine Balance Saffron Walden for a two-day practical training in the Zen with Ben Method — a musical approach to soundbath facilitation.
Whether you’re completely new to crystal singing bowls, already facilitating and want greater musical understanding, or you’re a yoga or Pilates teacher looking to expand your offering, this weekend takes you from the foundations of playing through to structuring and facilitating a complete soundbath.
Soundbaths are music
The instruments may be unusual, but the building blocks are familiar: tone, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, texture, space and structure.
You do not need to be a musician to understand these principles.
People arrive at a soundbath from completely different places, so we cannot prescribe how somebody should feel. What we can take responsibility for is the sound we create.
Some note relationships introduce more tension or acoustic friction, while others can sound more open and spacious. Understanding those differences allows you to make more intentional musical choices rather than simply playing instruments and hoping they work together.

Level 1 — Foundations
Level 1 develops the practical and musical foundations of your playing.
You’ll explore:
safe handling, setup and care of crystal singing bowls
mallet choice, striking and circling
creating a controlled, stable tone
Strike → Bloom → Sustain → Decay
pulse, beats and bars
the C major scale
intervals and harmonic relationships
ear training and listening skills
Crystal singing bowls form the foundation of the training. Ideally, bring at least two or three bowls, with a complete seven-bowl (C-D-E-F-G-A-B) chakra set strongly recommended
A limited number of full bowl sets can be supplied by Ben on request.
Level 2 — From Player to Practitioner
Level 2 brings those foundations together into a complete soundbath.
You’ll explore:
chords and chord progressions
major and minor harmonic colour
pacing, phrasing and space
crescendos, decrescendos and dynamics
smooth musical transitions
building and reducing layers
structuring a cohesive soundbath
integrating Tibetan bowls, gongs, drums, handpans, chimes and other instruments musically
The aim is not to give you one soundbath to copy. It is to give you the understanding to make your own confident musical decisions.
Continued Support
Your training does not end when the weekend finishes.
Participants receive ongoing free access to the monthly online Zen with Ben Masterclass, providing continued support, practical exploration and somewhere to keep asking questions as your playing develops.
Accredited Training
The complete Level 1 + Level 2 training is accredited by the International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM).
On successful completion of the training and assessment, you’ll receive your Zen with Ben Sound Academy certificate. This can be used when applying for appropriate professional practitioner insurance, subject to your insurer’s requirements, for those wishing to offer soundbath sessions professionally.

About Ben
I’m a lifelong musician with a background in performance, composition and music production, but the Zen with Ben Method began through a very personal experience.
In 2024, my partner Simonne experienced severe burnout. We had already been attending sound baths together for a number of years, but during that period we noticed that some sessions felt calm and spacious, while others could feel busy or overwhelming.
As a musician, that made me question what I was hearing. Why were certain tones being blended together? Why did the pacing sometimes feel random? Why were so many instruments being layered without an obvious musical relationship?
I’d never planned to become a soundbath facilitator. It genuinely wasn’t on my radar.
But Sim’s experience led me to start working with crystal singing bowls at home. With a pretty poor credit rating, I applied for a bank loan and thought, if I get accepted, I’ll take that as a sign.
I got accepted, bought a set of crystal singing bowls, and started using them in the evenings to create a gentler sound environment for Sim.
Then my musician’s brain took over. I hear the bowls as instruments. Notes have relationships. Timing matters. Harmony matters. Space matters. That's the foundation of the Zen with Ben Method.
The Method brings musicality into soundbathing by treating crystal singing bowls, gongs and other resonant instruments as part of a live ambient soundscape.
Through harmony, rhythm, pacing, dynamics and space, the aim is to create sound baths that feel intentional, cohesive and accessible.
Relaxation sits at the heart of the approach. We can’t control how someone will experience sound, but we can make thoughtful musical choices and avoid unnecessarily chaotic or overcrowded soundscapes.
I began playing drums at the age of four and went on to study piano, guitar, bass, percussion and strings. I also hold a degree in Music Production, and that background in musicianship, composition and sound design now shapes everything I do.
What started as something personal has grown into the way I now facilitate, teach and train others
The aim is simple: bring musicality to soundbathing, create space for relaxation, and make the experience accessible to everyone.
